NITRA

tl_files/fem/documents/Fakulta/Pracoviska/CVVP/nitra.jpg

tl_files/fem/documents/Fakulta/Pracoviska/CVVP/nitra1.jpg Nitra is one of the oldest town settlements in Slovakia. As early as the 9th century, it was a princely seat and bishopric of the Great Moravian Empire and later it welcomed the pretender to the throne of Hungary. Its 90,000 citizens make Nitra the largest city in western Slovakia outside of Bratislava. It offers a little of everything that draws most visitors to Slovakia: a good variety of restaurants, many pubs, and a surprising collection of history and architecture of both religious and more worldly origin.

The areas around Nitra provide several highly interesting activities. A hiking path will take you, for example, to Zobor Peak (588 meters), from the top of which is a lovely view of this winegrowing region. The region of Nitra attracts visitors by its protected natural riches. The national natural reserve at Zobor and the one at Lukpa are home to numerous species of animals and plants. The forest of chestnut trees in Jelenska Gastanica is particularly interesting to discover.

The cultural life in Nitra is very rich. There are many theatre and music festivals. Institutions which promote culture, science and art are Nitra Ragion Museum, the Missionary Museum, the Municipal Museum of Historical Vehicles, Slovak Agriculture Museum, the Art Gallery, the Puppet Theatre and the Theatre of Andrej Bagar which is especially important.
